L&T Secures Major Order for Mumbai–Ahmedabad Bullet Train – India’s dream of running its first bullet train is moving closer to reality. Larsen & Toubro (L&T), one of the country’s leading infrastructure companies, has bagged a large contract from the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL). The order is for building 156 km of high-speed ballastless track under Package T1 of the Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) corridor.
This new contract is a big achievement because it makes L&T responsible for more than 50% of the total track work of the project. With this development, construction work in Maharashtra will speed up, adding strength to India’s most ambitious railway project.

What the Order Includes
The package covers a stretch between Mumbai (Bandra-Kurla Complex) and Zaroli village on the Maharashtra–Gujarat border.
Key highlights of the order:
- 21 km of underground track work, linked with civil packages C1 and C2.
- 135 km of elevated viaduct tracks, which come under civil package C3.
- Complete design, supply, construction, testing, and commissioning of the tracks.
- Executed on a Design-Build Lump Sum Price basis.
This means L&T will handle the entire process – from planning and supply to final testing of the bullet train tracks.

Second Major Track Package for L&T
This is not the first time NHSRCL has awarded a bullet train contract to L&T. Back in April 2022, L&T had won Package T3, which included building 116 km of track from south of Vadodara to Sabarmati depot in Gujarat.
That work is already progressing well. With this latest win, L&T now holds contracts covering over half of the total 508 km track length of the Mumbai–Ahmedabad bullet train corridor. This makes L&T the key player in the project’s track construction.
Technology: Japanese Shinkansen System
The Mumbai–Ahmedabad bullet train will use advanced Japanese Shinkansen J Slab Track Technology.
Features of this system:
- Designed for trains running at 320 km/h speed
- Provides better ride quality and passenger comfort
- Ensures longer service life of tracks
- Easy to maintain compared to traditional systems
This is the same technology used in Japan’s famous bullet trains, which have a track record of safety, speed, and punctuality.
L&T’s Confidence in Timely Delivery
Mr. S. V. Desai, Whole-time Director & Sr. Executive Vice President (Civil Infrastructure), expressed confidence about this new order. He highlighted that the earlier Package T3 project gave L&T valuable experience in:
- Technology absorption from Japan
- Indigenisation of plant and machinery
- Value engineering to improve cost and efficiency
According to him, these learnings will help L&T deliver the new Package T1 on time and with top-class quality.
L&T’s Expertise in Ballastless Track Systems
L&T is already India’s leading company in the field of ballastless track technology. The company has experience in building different types of tracks such as:
- Plinth Track
- Slab Track
- Low Vibration Track
- Floating Slab Track
- Pre-cast Slab Track
At present, L&T is also working on ballastless track projects in Bengaluru, Chennai, Mumbai, and Jakarta. This experience makes the company well-prepared for the challenges of India’s first bullet train project.
Why This Project Matters
The Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor is the first bullet train project in India. With a length of 508 km, it will connect two major business hubs and cut travel time from 6–7 hours to just about 2 hours.
The benefits include:
- World-class travel: Safer, faster, and more comfortable journeys.
- Economic growth: Stronger trade, tourism, and business links between Maharashtra and Gujarat.
- Employment: Thousands of jobs created during construction and later for operations.
- Skill development: Indian engineers and workers gaining expertise in high-speed rail technology.
- Future-ready infrastructure: Laying the foundation for more bullet train projects in India.
Background of L&T
Larsen & Toubro is a USD 30 billion Indian multinational with expertise in EPC projects (Engineering, Procurement, Construction), hi-tech manufacturing, and services. For over eight decades, the company has been a leader in infrastructure and construction, with projects across the globe.
Its strong focus on quality, innovation, and timely delivery has helped it win major contracts repeatedly. The bullet train orders are another feather in L&T’s cap, proving its ability to handle complex projects of global standards.
Classification of the Order
According to L&T’s order classification system:
- Large Order = worth between ₹2,500 crore and ₹5,000 crore.
This new bullet train package falls under the “Large Order” category.
Conclusion
The Mumbai–Ahmedabad bullet train project is India’s first step into the future of high-speed rail travel. With L&T securing this 156 km track contract in Maharashtra, the project has achieved another milestone.
Using Japanese Shinkansen technology, advanced engineering, and L&T’s proven expertise, the country is on track to experience a world-class travel system. More than just reducing travel time, the bullet train will transform connectivity, create jobs, and boost India’s image as a modern infrastructure leader.
